Men teaching in the news

Every day we see more and more stories about men teaching - the attention to this topic is hopeful and we believe an indication of the interest.

Both the posting of the article to ABCNews.com and the Good Morning America segment generate more than 30,000 hits in one day to the MenTeach.org website! We've been watching the comment section of their site and have read many stories.

Here is one comment:

My son had an amazing experience teaching

Montreal, Canada
My son, as he has told me, had an amazing experience working with children over the summer at the Daycare.

The children anticipated his arrival on the days he worked. I had never seen the educators have so much fun and be so involved in "rough play" as when he was there. One educator who has worked with me for the last 18 years said, she had a blast working with him, as he brought so much to the group.

Needless to say, I am very proud of my son. He seems to be a natural.

Now read her son's story.

Every Head Start required to indicate male involvement

[MenTeach: One of the men working with Head Start monitoring was able to get an addition in the monitoring of Head Starts to include male involvement indicators – like books and posters showing men nurturing. One person can really make a difference!]

Every Head Start program will now need to pay attention to including books and posters of men as nurturers as they design their classroom environments.

It's like having four hundred grandkids

I am a retired Federal analyst. I retired at 55 with 32.5 years service (counting an Army stint). When I mentioned to a teacher friend/golfing buddy that I needed something to do, he suggested teaching school. Not wanting to work full time, I applied for a substitute teacher position and was hired.

Do you want to be a television star?

My name is Pamela and I'm a television producer in Los Angeles, working for the tv development company, Target Entertainment. I am currently doing research for a tv series in development about dads in daycare. I want men who have chosen child care as their full time profession, either in their home or at a facility. They can care for anywhere from 6 kids to 50. The candidates need to have big personalities, charisma, etc. that would lend themselves to having their own television show, as well.

Research Articles: Early childhood textbook images reflect "rules" for male teachers

Early Childhood Research and Practice
Men represent roughly 2% of all teachers in preschool and kindergarten classrooms in the United States, and that number may be declining. Researchers have argued that the dearth of male teachers is related in multiple complex ways to the feminized nature of ECED teaching.

Northeastern Men Meet

Craig Simpson - NE USA
A year ago (2007) four of us met in the backyard of Jeffrey Robbins' house near Hanover, New Hampshire.

Last month in late October, 2008, we had seven men on Jerry Parr's porch in Londonderry, New Hampshire. That's almost twice the size. It actually seemed like more things were happening this time around.
