Tallahassee Community College and the Florida Department of Education have announced a new partnership to bring the Troops to Teachers program back to Florida.

Troops to Teachers is a nationwide program designed to help transitioning service members and veterans begin new careers as K-12 school teachers.

In Florida, the Troops to Teachers program previously operated through a partnership with Florida Atlantic University, but the partnership ended in November, 2016 and the program is currently dormant in the Sunshine State.

TCC and the Department of Education submitted the Troops to Teachers application in January of this year and the grant anticipates five years of funding to TCC.

“Florida faces teacher shortages in critical fields such as science and mathematics,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “The Florida Troops to Teachers program has the potential to help staff our schools with motivated, dedicated professionals who are experienced leaders in these areas.”

“TCC has been recognized as a military-friendly college numerous times,” said TCC Provost Feleccia Moore-Davis. “We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to play a broader role in helping our veterans transition to civilian life and take on their next mission in service to Florida’s school children.”

Troops to Teachers’ goals are to reduce unemployment among veterans, address critical teacher shortages, and increase the number of male and minority teachers in the nation’s classrooms.
