Real Men Teach (RMT) is a multifaceted academic program instituted during the 2007-2008 academic year for emerging teacher leaders. Its purpose is to attract, prepare, and encourage more young men to enter the teaching profession. Through personal professional development activities, support services, individual mentoring, exposure to the education field, and limited financial support, members of RMT are engaged in multiple experiences to maximize their academic growth and market potential.
As an academic support program designed to address the critical shortage of male teachers, it is our priority to provide program participants, or protégés, with the necessary tools and experiences that will prepare them for success in their respective teacher education programs. We achieve this in several ways, including academic coaching, workshops and seminars, meaningful partnerships and collaborative efforts with various organizations and institutions, and through personalized mentorship.
In addition, we provide leadership training, limited financial support, social development activities, and personal enhancements — all that speaks to the total preparation of male “teacher leaders.” Founded in 2007, Real Men Teach (RMT) is currently exclusive to Winston-Salem State University and accepts various teacher education candidates.
