There’s a new book coming out in January 2010. The author, Richard Whitmire, talks about male teachers in one of his chapters:

‘I interviewed a passel of male teachers and former male teachers for a chapter in my new book The Trouble With Boys and here’s the reasons the men gave for leaving the classroom. First off, the pay is too low — they can’t support a wife and kid on an elementary school teacher’s salary. Secondly, if you are a male and you work around little kids, pretty much every parent you meet thinks that you are a child molester. And that’s exhausting. What they didn’t say but what the data shows is that male teachers get promoted faster than female ones. The data is silent on the cause of that — ingrained sexism? Or because they put themselves forward for advancement more readily than their female counterparts? Some combination?’Go to his website.
