Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools
TITLE: Elementary Counselor
JOB GOAL:
To provide counseling services that support the social, emotional, academic, and
developmental needs of elementary students.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Ability to work an 8 hour duty day in the locations assigned. This position may require work to be performed in more than one building.
After receiving training, provide interpretation of test data and grades for students, parents, and staff.
Coordinate and facilitate assessments
Physical and emotional ability to perform required work and move about as needed in the fast-paced, highly intensive school environment.
Ability to use technology, i.e., internet, e-mail, Microsoft Word, Student Data Management Software.
Demonstrate an understanding of the academic and instructional goals of the District Improvement Plan.
Teach guidance lessons through Character Education activities, in collaboration with the classroom teachers that teaches the expectations of the student Code of Conduct.
Collaborate with building administration on an appropriate plan to address school culture and climate, specifically bullying
Facilitate Support Groups based on the results of a Needs Assessment.
Facilitate and Coordinate the SIT (Student Improvement Team) meetings for students who have behavioral/social/ emotional concerns.
Attend monthly SIT/Second Step Coordinator meetings.
Gather behavioral data on students who have behavioral concerns, using different observation tools, providing strategies for classroom teachers.
Collaborate with administrators to identify trigger behaviors that result in frequent office referrals and impede instruction; and to reduce the number of referrals through prevention strategies.
Consult and work with parents regarding behavioral and academic interventions
Refer students and parents to appropriate community resources effectively with Student Services.
Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and professional judgment
Participate in staff development (school and department) meetings to update skills and improve knowledge – as well as to satisfy recertification/re-licensure requirements
Demonstrate knowledge of guidance techniques
Maintains confidentiality and professionalism
Participate in IEP meetings as requested
Collaborate with other staff or service providers to problem solve issues and assist in developing programs that will meet the needs of students.
Consult and collaborate with school staff regarding the orientation of new students, kindergarten roundup and collaborate with middle school counselors on the transition of students going to middle school.
Guide students through career awareness and planning.
Maintain a neat and appropriate appearance
Other duties as assigned
COMMUNICATION
Maintains communication with teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.
Provides health services, information, and counseling in an effective and positive manner to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
Completes accident/incident reports for students/staff.
Compiles data for statistical purposes.
Maintains confidentiality regarding educational records.
ORGANIZATION
Maintains a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation.
Maintains the daily environment of the health office facility and supplies.
Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.
Performs other related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Meets the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education
Valid Kansas School Counselor License at the elementary level
Teaching experience at the elementary level highly preferred

SALARY: Based on USD #500 teacher’s salary schedule
REPORT TO: Assistant Director of Student Services
Building principals at each assigned building.
EVALUATION: Performance will be conducted in accordance with Board of Education.
