1) Public Mixed on Gender Roles in Jobs; 7% Prefer Male Elementary School Teachers
There is much debate about what occupations men and women should have. In a study by Pew Research a survey shows there is bias towards one gender for specific occupations.

2) Why boys fail
There’s a new book coming out in January 2010. The author, Richard Whitmire, writes about male teachers in one of his chapters:

‘I interviewed a passel of male teachers and former male teachers for a chapter in my new book The Trouble With Boys and here’s the reasons the men gave for leaving the classroom. First off, the pay is too low — they can’t support a wife and kid on an elementary school teacher’s salary. Secondly, if you are a male and you work around little kids, pretty much every parent you meet thinks that you are a child molester. And that’s exhausting.’

3) Additional movies about male teachers suggested by reader Jon Bradley, from McGill University in Canada

4) New places to order the new DVD about male teachers – Expect male involvement
Expect Male Involvement: Recruiting & Retaining Men in Early Childhood Education. An exciting and effective DVD about men in the lives of children is now available for purchase. It’s already been shown in Georgia, Canada and Northern Ireland. Tell us where YOU have shown the video. It’s a great video about the importance of men in the lives of children.

5) Write your story for a new book
We are inviting you to contribute a chapter in a monograph that focuses on men in the lives of children. Your story is very important to the field of education and is worth sharing with a broader audience. If you would like to contribute to the monograph, all we would need from you now is a brief biographical outline and a response letting us know if you would like to participate or not.

6) Hundreds of ties means teacher doesn’t wear same one twice all school year
Don McAllister changes ties like some people change shoes. Ghost ties come out in October. December brings ties with Santa and snowmen. ‘I probably have about 30 Christmas ties,’ he said. McAllister didn’t start out as a tie wearer.

7) MenTeach has had millions of hits
A few readers have asked how much web traffic does our site have. MenTeach.org has been around since April 2002. We’ve had one revision of our site back starting February 2007. You’ll see that we’ve had over 2.4 millions hits in the last two years. The software that tracks our site traffic screens out the spambots (as best it can).

8) The few, the beloved, the male elementary teachers
Twenty fourth-graders sit on the edge of their seats, their wide eyes focused on the man in the center of the room. ‘Can anyone read my mind?’ the man asks. ‘What else do we need to do when we walk in the hallway?’

9) Male Student Needs Help: How To Win Respect?
I’m a male going into Elementary Education! I had begun my student teaching last fall and had a very bad experience with a college evaluator who was very critical and unsupportive of my work. My evaluator treated me unfairly it seemed compared to the rest of the female student teachers whom she was in charge of as well. Do you have any advice for him?
