Great post…are you aware that the Schott Fellowship is sponsoring a males in early education and care roundtable on Tues, April 8 (maybe you can plan a fieldtrip with the kids.
The following Friday, MA AEYC and the Schott Fellowship are sponsoring a Men in EEC reception. Please consider joining us – you can email me at kcox@ipswichschools.org.
And I think your brand of “activism” speaks volumes – keep it up.

    Hi Dave,
I’ve been in the early education and family support field for quite awhile. I’m currently working to provide support and education to families with children 0 through three years old (www.birthtothreeipswich.org) . I’m also serving as a mentor to a group Schott Fellowship fellows studying the roles of males in early education ( http://www.schottfellowship.org) . I addition to that, I’m an active member of the Children’s Music Network, where you can find many male musician-educators (including Pete Seeger) working with young kids ( http://www.cmnonline.org ).

What particular aspect of teaching are you researching? I’d be glad to contribute if you wish.

Thanks for your reply. As a matter of fact, we’ve been looking for a voice (or many voices) from around New England to discuss and act on improving gender balance in the education of young children.

We’ve (“we” being a handful of us, but a growing handful) especially have hoped to hear from Rhode Island. I was unsuccessful in attempts to establish a contact with the state’s Head Start organization.

We’ve have a number of New England-based events coming up in year, and there is also a very positive new initiative coming from the Schott Fellowship, located in Cambridge, MA.

Please email me at kittcox@cove.com and let’s continue this discussion. Kitt

Bryan wrote “It’s likely to be easier to be hired to teach high school students then earlier grades (more people are more interested in working with younger children because they believe they are easier to manage).”

Not to contradict Bryan, but by way of providing another perspective –
If you’re interested in working with really young kids and their families, I think you could find a home in the zero-five sector. Although you may encounter suspicion and poor wages (oh boy) it’s worth it to a lot of us. Want to make an impact – get them young and get their parents on board to. At times, I think I’ve benefited from a pro-male preschool teacher preference some people have (despite the “diaper issue”).
I believe the California AEYC has a very active male teacher group – check them out. Good luck,

    Kitt

Congratulations on your new career. If all goes well with your teaching, perhaps we’ll need fewer lawyers, judges and prisons in the future.
btw – my eldest son, who was also a preschool student of mine, is now a lawyer – and a damn good dad to his two sons.

Most days I look forward to work with young kids and their families. That’s a lot more than I can say for a lot of other jobs I’ve held.

I also believe I bring skill, experience, passion and a much- needed sense of humor to early education. And if you really want to make a difference in this too-often mean old world, I believe that , in the words of Marianne Williamson,

“There is no single effort more radical in its potential for saving the world than a transformation of the way we raise our children.”

    Hello Bobby,

My short answer to your question is that our children’s teachers need to offer an accurate reflection of the diversity of the society we live in. In this case, both boys and girls get exposed to a lot of positive models about what a man or an African American can be.

My question back at you –

“what, if any, difference do you think African American males would make by working in “representative numbers” in preschools , family childcare, and
other family support roles in their communities?”.

    respectfuly and curiously, Kitt
